Some experts claim meta tags are of no use.  In their tests they focus on the meta tags keywords and make one big mistake: the meta tags have to be relevant. Bogus words like "qiskodslajdmnkd", misspelled words, your competitors name in the keywords are indeed useless. But if you create your meta tags with care, searchengines will use your tags one-on-one. A better title and a better description gives a higher CTR.

zoekmachines nemen metatags over in de vermelding

Search engines like Google show meta tags in their search results. You perform a search task by filling out:
  • (A) certain keywords.  The results you will get is
  • (B) the title tag and
  • (C) the small text item, the description tag.

Example of a meta tag description

Add the following metatag in the HTML source of your webpage:

<meta name="description" content="On our website you will find all the information about meta tags, search engine optimization and submitting your website to the search engines.">
It's very important that you use the keywords you want your site to be found under, in your DESCRIPTION tag. The more frequently a search engine spider finds a certain word on your website and in your meta tags, it values that word as important. Your site will be positioned higher in the search index.
Try to give each page of your website a relevant title, description and keywords that correspond with the text on your website. A visitor will find the exact information within your website, on the correct page.

A well formed description tag will be shown directly by e.g. Google. That's why the description tag is also named the
google meta description.

Where should you add this description tag?

You may add the meta tags in all of your webpages, so not only in the first index page. Make sure that on every page relevant meta tags are added.  Add keywords and phrases that are relevant and correspond to the text on that specific page. It might be a lot of work to add specific meta tags to each page but you will notice in time that it works!
