A Guide for Making Money Without Having a Nine to Five Job

Not everyone can figure out the secrets of making money without having a nine to five job. This doesn't change the fact that millions of people have already done it, though, nor the fact that the solution is rather simple. With just a little bit of time, planning, and intelligent effort, you'll be on your way to breaking free of the daily grind that you hate so much.
You'll need to do at least three things:
  1. Have a skill that others perceive as valuable
  2. Find a place to market and sell that skill
  3. Convince others to give you the opportunity to work for a fee
Before going any further, it's important that you understand that this method doesn't result in a recurring, passive stream of revenue. If you want to do something like that, you're better off learning how to set up and monetize a blog. The good news, though, is that breaking free from your nine to five will allow you to have all of the time you need to put the effort and dedication into building a blog that generates serious profits.
Have a Skill That Others Perceive as Valuable
For the most part, people with skills as writers, programmers, graphic designers, and search engine optimizers will have an easy go at this. These are skills that other people are paying for every single day, and they're going to continue buying these services indefinitely. If you have the ability to do one of these things, you can skip to the next section.
If you don't already have a skill that others perceive as valuable, though, all is not lost. Virtual assistant services are in high demand and can pay rather well. You don't need any special experience, degree, or training to get started as a virtual assistant. This is a catch-all career choice for those learning to make money without having a regular job, but many people find it rather boring.
Finally, if you have any other skill that business owners or average every day people find interesting, you can use that to make some money, too. People have made money online by selling paintings, their knitting work, and just about anything else you can imagine.
Find a Place to Market and Sell that Skill
If you've decided to sell a skill, such as writing or graphic design, then there are plenty of places online where you can set up a profile and start bidding on paid work. Elance.com, Guru.com, Freelancer.com, and Odesk.com are the most popular. But there are other places you can turn to as well.
Consider finding forums for internet marketing and becoming a regular contributor. Don't promote your services too much, though. Focus on providing helpful information, starting new threads that get people's attention, and teaching others how to perform your skill.
Don't be afraid that they'll take this information and use it to do the work on their own. Once they realize just how complicated the process is, they'll want to hire someone else to do it for them. Since you demonstrated your expertise by providing the details of working through the process, they'll be likely to think of you first when it's time to hire. You'll get the job and earn some cash.
Convincing Others to Give You the Opportunity to Work for a Fee
The most common reason to resist breaking into the world of freelancing, or any other self-employment model, is simply not having demonstrable experience in the field. Don't worry about this, though. There's a simple solution to getting around it.
When you first start bidding on new projects explain that you've only recently started providing this service for a fee. Discount your rate and you'll encourage others to give you a shot. Reverse the risk by offering to do a small sample at no cost, just to prove your capabilities.
Once they give you a shot and hire you, you'll start building a client base and portfolio at the same time. It can be slow going, so you shouldn't just quit your nine to five job and hope to replace your income overnight. Stick with it for a few weeks, and you'll notice that you generate a nice, stable income.
